A device reputation is never a good thing. This is the reputation that a computer or another type of device has gathered because the person who used it committed a crime or broke the rules that were laid down on a website. This could happen, for example, if someone was leaving derogatory remarks on a message board. The person who ran the message board would tell them that they had to stop, of course, but this might not work. They would then be banned. This could be done to a username alone, but it is often done for the entire device. This stops people from just making another username and logging onto the site once again to continue leaving the kind of remarks that got them banned in the first place.

A computer could have a reputation for a more serious thing than this as well. For instance, some computers are used to break into online bank accounts and steal money. Criminals do this because they can make a lot of money without the risk of going to the actual bank and holding it up. They also do it because brick and mortar banks rarely have any money on hand; bank accounts, however, have a lot of money. All of this is digital, but it will still work if it is transferred to another digital source. When a computer is identified as one that was used for this purpose, it is automatically blocked from similar sites in the future.

One problem that comes about is that someone might buy a used computer that has a bad device reputation. They might not have done anything wrong themselves. Most of the time, they will not even know the person that they bought the computer from. It may have been shipped to them after it was sold through an online auction website. They should not be held responsible for whatever the seller did with the computer before he or she got rid of it, but they might be blocked from sites that they need to visit because the software will not know that a new person has the computer.

The is really starting to be a problem because criminals do not want to be stopped. They do not want to be identified. Once they think that their computer has been tagged as one that was used for crime, they sell it as fast as they can.

It can be hard or even impossible for a device reputation to be made good again. Once the damage is done, it stays with the computer or tablet. People always need to be aware of this so that they can be very careful when they are buying used equipment.
